Middle Eastern Darbuka/Doumbek Technique with Mark DeFilippo of Ishtar

June 25, 2011
3pm to 4:30pm at School of Jellyfish 183 Main St, Beacon NY 12508

Mark De Filippo, Pittsburgh's premiere darbuka player, brings with him over twenty years of percussion experience including drum instruction. He has been playing drums since the seventh grade, where he started his career on the bass drum and tri-toms for the Pittsburgh's North Hills Buccaneers Drum and Baton Corp, under the direction of Jan Fung. Mark has played a variety of styles of music with a number of rock, blues and folk bands, but discovered the darbuka and bellydance music in 2006. Within a few months, Mark helped create Ishtar, Pittsburgh's only Middle Eastern Bellydance Band.

Mark will teach basic darbuka-striking technique and six rhythms common to Middle Eastern music. He will cover how to hold the darbuka, proper posture and technique, as well as how to make the three main darbuka sounds--the "DUM", the "TEK" and the "KA".

Both drummers and dancers will benefit from this class. The drummer will learn to keep a basic rhythm to accompany a melody instrument for bellydance songs and to expand his/her rhythm repertoire. The dancer will learn to recognize basic rhythms common to Middle Eastern songs and will learn to anticipate beats, tempo and rhythm changes necessary to improvise to live music.

Take this workshop and join in Jalsah Hudson Valley - a 2 hour bellydance jam session with Ishtar, Pittsburgh's Vintage Bellydance Band!

Mark’s workshop: $35 or take both workshops for $50

Play Bellydance Songs On Any Instrument with Melissa Murphey of Ishtar

June 25, 2011
5pm-6:30pm at School of Jellyfish 183 Main St, Beacon NY 12508

Melissa Murphey, clarinetist in Ishtar, is living proof that you can go back! An avid clarinet player for twelve years, Melissa recycled/reused her high school clarinet to play bellydance classics ten years after graduating college. She picked up her old horn ten years ago and ever since then, has focused only on Mediterranean music. In 2006, she formed Ishtar, Pittsburgh's Vintage Bellydance Band for the express purpose of keeping this fantastic music alive as well as providing a live musical backdrop for the bellydancers she knows. Her goal is to encourage musicians to pick up their old instruments and play again given that the bellydance classics are fun and easy to learn. With so many bellydancers out there, someone should be playing these songs!

Melissa’s workshop is perfect for musicians and percussionists ready to try something different! She will teach the basic structure of several popular Middle Eastern bellydance songs in an ensemble format. Percussionists can learn how specific rhythms fit particular songs and how to change seamlessly between rhythms. Melody musicians can learn popular Middle Eastern songs and will be given instruction on basic makam theory.

Songs to be covered are Hadouni Hadouni, Yeshilem, Rompi (9/8 time), and Uskudara.

Sheet music will be available. Visit http://www.bellydancesheetmusic.com for advance copies of songs. The goal for this workshop is to enable all percussionists and melody musicians to play common songs together. All instruments are welcome, as this music can be played on ANY instrument. So dust off your old band or orchestra instrument, you too can play this fun music!

Take this workshop and join in Jalsah Hudson Valley - a 2 hour bellydance jam session with Ishtar, Pittsburgh's Vintage Bellydance Band!

Melissa's workshop: $35 or take both workshops for $50.
